Principal Duties and Responsibilities-Assists teachers, students, and other personnel in researching materials for use in the classroom for the purpose of enhancing
classroom assignments and projects.
-Encourages the use of library resources (e.g. read-alouds, book talks, fairs, contests, displays, etc.) for the purpose of promoting literacy at school.
-Inventories library books, curriculum materials, equipment, and other materials for the purpose of tracking current library books and equipment.
-Maintains an attractive physical environment in the library for the purpose of promoting interest in and use of library materials.
-Monitors students within the library for the purpose of maintaining discipline and order in the library media center.
-Orients students and staff to the use of library resources (e.g. classification system, on line catalog, care of materials, etc.) for the purpose of establishing familiarity with library resources, services, and required processes.
-Performs routine and preventive maintenance of library books, textbooks, media and in-library computer equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials.
-Processes a variety of documents and materials (e.g. orders for library books, periodicals, videos, films, notices of missing or
damaged books, incoming library and textbooks, periodicals, media, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining library/video collection.
-Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, students, teachers, staff, vendors, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.
RequirementsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in the repair of library/media materials; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. Required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: elements of library operation; cataloging systems; and age appropriate children's literature. Required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working with frequent interruptions; communicating with school age children; displaying mechanical aptitude; and maintaining confidentiality.
Education and Experience
Elementary Education K-6 certification in Nebraska, library media endorsement.
